KYIV. THE RESIDENCE. THE DUTY ROOM. TUESDAY, 02:59.

Two clocks on the wall, an hour apart: Kyiv 02:59, Moscow 03:59. Under them a screen holds Moscow's own words for the next hour, as Interfax rendered them: "engineering reconnaissance." Below, Washington's date for the same pause: 29 October. The duty officer's tea has a skin on it, beside the map of the left bank.

In one minute it is the pause in Oleshky. Or it is not.

ROUTE

KYIV. THE RESIDENCE. THE KITCHEN. TUESDAY, 01:05.

Kyrylo Budanov · head of the President's Office since January; for five years he ran military intelligence

Volodymyr Zelenskyy · President of Ukraine; before politics, he played a president on television

Bread crusts on a board, a knife with honey on it. At 01:00 the gate lights showed one car leaving: the flagged one, empty, as Budanov ordered. Now he deals on the kitchen table. His phone lies face up by the sugar bowl, the stopwatch at 91:55:01. His thumbnail is still black from the flag's screw.

Voronezh. Our drones; two dead, says their governor. Moscow says 290 downed overnight and shuts its airports. Their jet Gerans fly at 600 an hour; we have ordered more than a thousand interceptors. WATCH. "Their sky closes for a night. Ours for the winter." UN inquiry: their strikes on our heat and power are war crimes. "The attacks have intensified once again." WATCH. "Law before winter. It doesn't heat a flat." Ushakov: talks after 4 November, with Europe at the table. Putin, Xi and Trump at APEC, being prepared. WATCH. "They want Europe in the room so it stops standing behind us." Serbia: the students won. Belgrade still needs Russian gas. LATER. "Gas first. December." Proekt and ICIJ: a Russian payment service, A7, moved up to 58 tonnes of cash a month. WATCH. "Someone weighs their money by the tonne. Find who carries it." Musk confirms SpaceX restricted our Starlink. From State, nothing. In Michigan, Trump insults Norway over the Nobel. WATCH. "Musk answered for Washington again. And Norway hosts our talks." Houthis claim a missile at Riyadh airport; Riyadh says intercepted. Delegations in Tehran. The White House: no attack on Iran before the midterms. WATCH. "Another war waiting for a date." Algeria sends troops to guard energy sites in Niger, its first deployment abroad since 1973. LATER. "Sahel gas. Moscow's neighbourhood now." Kim opens a new bridge to China at Dandong. LATER. "Shells cross bridges." Ebola in Congo: 9,964 cases. LATER. "Not ours. The donors' money is." Kane wins the Ballon d'Or. Moscow gets the 2030 weightlifting worlds. LATER. "They plan in our decades."

One card stays under Budanov's saucer. Zelenskyy sees its corner. Hamburg sits today.

ZELENSKYY: Theirs.

Oleshky, an occupied town on the Dnipro's left bank. Gerasimov: a pause from 04:00 Moscow today, to evacuate residents. The White House, which says Melania Trump brokered it, says Thursday the 29th. Moscow's ministry now says we struck the town before the pause.

ZELENSKYY: A pause with two start dates belongs to whoever starts it.

BUDANOV: Then let Washington start it. Thursday is the date they'll defend.

Olena comes in from the hall in her coat and lays a card on top of his. Not one he dealt. The route card from her car, face up, in Budanov's hand: Mykolaiv. Hold for 29.

Olena Zelenska · First Lady of Ukraine; she studied architecture in Kryvyi Rih

OLENA: Under the strap of my bag. I always check the strap. Deal it.

Budanov looks at Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy looks at the honey knife, and she reads it in the place where he isn't looking.

OLENA: The people of Oleshky leave on Moscow's date. Moscow's roads, Moscow's checkpoints. Toward Russia, you said on Sunday. Somebody should stand at the other end on the same day.

BUDANOV: On Thursday, Washington stands next to you.

OLENA: Mrs Trump's date.

ZELENSKYY: Her date.

Olena sorts the card herself: LATER, face up, on top of Serbia. Budanov doesn't take it back.

Israel votes at seven. Eisenkot's list ahead, Likud behind, nobody near 61. Trump's people want a government without Ben-Gvir and Smotrich. NOW. "The winner sets Iran's clock, and Iran's clock sets oil." Brazil: Lula, 51.79. Flavio Bolsonaro wants it annulled because polls stayed open two hours longer. The real down twelve percent. NOW. "Our would-be mediator has to defend his own count first."

ZELENSKYY: Moscow talks after the fourth. Israel counts by the fourth. Everybody is waiting for the same Wednesday.

VALDAI. PUTIN'S RESIDENCE. TUESDAY, 03:58 MOSCOW (02:58 KYIV).

Vladimir Putin · President of Russia; a KGB officer in Dresden when the Wall came down

Yuri Ushakov · Kremlin foreign-policy aide, on the phone; ten years Moscow's ambassador in Washington

The same hour, one rung up. A carriage clock on the desk, the ministry's statement under it: Ukraine struck Oleshky ahead of the pause. Through the window there is no lake, only trees and red lights. Satellite pictures counted more than fifty air-defence towers around this house. A glass of tea in a metal holder, full and cold.

USHAKOV (ON THE PHONE): The Americans have it in writing. The twenty-ninth.

PUTIN: Then on Thursday they will thank us for Tuesday.

USHAKOV: And the Europeans want to know if they're invited.

PUTIN: Give Europe a chair. After the fourth.

USHAKOV: Our airports were shut again last night. Voronezh.

PUTIN: Then the statement goes out before the hour, not after.

He moves the ministry page so the clock stands on bare wood. The minute hand reaches twelve. He stays at the window, where a tower's light blinks between two pines.

KYIV. THE RESIDENCE. THE DUTY ROOM. 03:00.

The other clock turns too: Kyiv 03:00, Moscow 04:00. On the map of the left bank nothing moves and nothing arrives. The duty officer writes the time on his pad, and nothing after it.

WASHINGTON. THE WHITE HOUSE, RESIDENCE FLOOR. MONDAY, 21:00 (03:00 KYIV).

Melania Trump · First Lady of the United States; she grew up in Sevnica, Slovenia, on the Sava

The pad's empty line arrives here as a full one, on the same feed: WHITE HOUSE: OLESHKY PAUSE 29 OCT. On the desk, a private draft for the morning with "October 29" typed in. A pen with its cap chewed flat. Beside it a letter from Kyiv in two languages, signed O.Z. She hasn't taken her heels off.

AIDE: Moscow's hour was just now. Nobody says yet whether anything moved.

MELANIA: Moscow will say Tuesday.

AIDE: We could move ours to the twenty-seventh. Stand on the same day.

She crosses out 29 and writes 27 above it. She looks at the signature on the letter. She crosses out 27 and writes 29 again, harder, through the paper.

MELANIA: If we stand on their day, it's their pause.

The aide takes the draft with two dates on it, one crossed out twice. On the aide's tablet, one line below the Oleshky item: BRAZIL'S REAL SINKS.

BRASÍLIA. THE ALVORADA PALACE. MONDAY, 22:10 (03:10 KYIV).

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva · President of Brazil, re-elected Sunday for a fourth term; once a shoeshine boy in São Paulo

The Bovespa chart replays on a screen: down ten percent, then a flat line for thirty minutes where the exchange stopped trading. A cafezinho, a sugar packet torn and not poured. On his phone, congratulations from Kyiv. Above it, a clip of Flávio Bolsonaro: the extension was "unacceptable."

AIDE: The court has recognised you. He wants it annulled anyway.

LULA: He wants the two hours back. And everything that happened in them.

LULA: Write to Kyiv. I'm ready to mediate.

AIDE: Tonight you can't mediate the real, Presidente.

Lula starts the reply himself with one thumb. He deletes it. He pours the sugar into the cold coffee and drinks it in one go. On the muted television the channel moves to Israel: polls open in four hours.

JERUSALEM. THE PRIME MINISTER'S RESIDENCE. TUESDAY, 05:10.

Benjamin Netanyahu · Prime Minister of Israel; he spent his teenage years outside Philadelphia, where his father taught

Mike Huckabee · US ambassador to Israel, on the phone; once governor of Arkansas, and a bass player

The same pictures, from the other side: ballot boxes in a school hall. A seat map on the table, 120 squares. Netanyahu has circled 61 until the marker went dry. Black coffee. The morning paper folded to one report: people around Trump want a government without his two partners on the right.

NETANYAHU: Say it again at seven. On camera.

HUCKABEE (ON THE PHONE): I said it yesterday. There's no pressure.

NETANYAHU: Then say it where they can film you.

HUCKABEE: Bibi, you have a vote to win. Iran comes after the third.

NETANYAHU: Everybody has a date for me.

HUCKABEE: I'm not going on camera today.

Netanyahu shakes the marker and presses it to the 61. No ink. He goes over the circle anyway, a dent in the paper and no line.

KYIV. THE RESIDENCE. THE HALL. TUESDAY, 05:30.

Her coat over the newel post. The bag by the door, packed since Saturday. On the hall table, her car key, lying flat where she put it down yesterday morning. Grey light on the floor tiles.

KYIV. THE RESIDENCE. THE HALL. 05:40.

His phone lights in his hand: Israel: polls open at 07:00. He puts it face down on the hall table, next to her key. Olena comes down the stairs with her hair still wet.

OLENA: You signed his card.

VOLODYMYR: I agreed a road. Mykolaiv is a city with a roof.

OLENA: You let Kyrylo choose the day I'm brave.

VOLODYMYR: Their ministry says we fired on Oleshky before four. Their date, their checkpoints, their story. You'd be standing inside it.

OLENA: The women coming out of there don't get Washington's date. They get the bus they get.

VOLODYMYR: Then go Thursday. Her date. You two can share it.

He hears it before she does. She takes the key off the table without looking at the phone beside it.

OLENA: I wrote to her because you couldn't get her husband on the line.

She picks up the bag. He opens the door for her, because it's heavy and because he can't stop himself. Neither says the next thing.

STINGER. KYIV. THE RESIDENCE. THE DUTY ROOM. 06:05.

Two clocks: Kyiv 06:05, Moscow 07:05. The gate log on the screen climbs one line: 05:52, car 1 out. Mrs Zelenska. No flag. On the map, a blue dot on the road south. Far to the west, the flagged car, empty since one o'clock, still driving a road nobody needs.

Budanov stands in the doorway with the route card. He took it off LATER himself. Under his line, Mykolaiv. Hold for 29, there is a second one now, in her hand: Kherson. 27.

He photographs it and sends it up one floor.

She is on Moscow's date. Washington says Thursday. Which one do we say began?

The answer comes in under a minute.

Ours. 03:00. Sybiha says it before Washington wakes up.

Budanov takes the Hamburg card from his pocket, the one he never dealt, and lays it on the duty officer's pad, on the line that says 03:00 and nothing after it.

Washington wakes in seven hours. The White House draft still says Thursday. Her dot is five hundred kilometres from Kherson.
